Ten ways How to Biblically Support Your Husband During Trials

How to Biblically Support Your Husband During Trials

by Marissa Rice

Marriage is a sacred covenant—a union not just between a man and a woman, but a bond under God’s guidance and grace. When trials come, they can either divide or draw us closer. As wives, we are called to be a helpmeet (Genesis 2:18), and this role is never more vital than in seasons of hardship. My husband and I have just experienced several trials and one of the big ones was a job layoff, and during that time I wrote a list of the different ways I found to support him through it. I hope this is an encouragement to anyone else experiencing a trial. Support looks differently based on your worldview, which begs the questions:

But how do we biblically support our husbands during difficult times?

Here are ten ways to encourage and strengthen your husband while keeping Christ at the center.

1. Pray Continually

The most powerful thing you can do is intercede for him.

“The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.” – James 5:16

Pray for his wisdom, his heart, and his faith. Bring every fear and frustration to the Lord, trusting Him to work in your husband’s life in ways only He can.

2. Anchor Him in God’s Word

“Fear not, for I am with you…” – Isaiah 41:10
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good…” – Romans 8:28

Gently and lovingly share Scripture. God’s Word comforts, corrects, and provides hope in the darkness.

3. Be Quick to Listen

“…let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.” – James 1:19

Sometimes he doesn’t need answers. He just needs you to listen. Let him process, vent, and be vulnerable without feeling judged.

4. Speak Words of Life

“Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.” – Proverbs 16:24

Let your words be filled with kindness, respect, and truth. Remind him of who he is in Christ, and what you admire about him.

5. Stand Beside Him

“If one falls, the other will lift up his companion.” – Ecclesiastes 4:10

You are his partner in this trial. Share the load. Be a calm presence, a helping hand, and a steady encourager.

6. Build Up His Faith

“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.” – Hebrews 10:23

Encourage him to stay rooted in Christ. Read Scripture together. Sing a hymn. Talk about God’s past faithfulness and what you’re trusting Him to do now.

7. Wait on the Lord Together

“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him…” – Psalm 37:7

Trials test our patience. Don’t rush ahead or pressure him to act quickly. Trust God’s perfect timing.

8. Foster a Peaceful Home

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.” – John 14:27

Let your home reflect the peace of Christ. Even in hard times, let your tone, attitude, and rhythm speak calm and grace.

9. Lead with Grace

“…by the conduct of their lives, without a word…” – 1 Peter 3:1

Model a quiet and faithful trust in God. Let your life be a testimony of godly womanhood—rooted, joyful, and unshaken.

10. Love Without Condition

“Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” – 1 Corinthians 13:7

Love him in his weakness. Serve him with joy. Show him a love that mirrors Christ—steadfast, sacrificial, and full of grace.

In every season, God is near. Trials will come, but so will growth, healing, and sanctification. By supporting your husband biblically, you are not just strengthening your marriage—you are glorifying God.

“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” – Exodus 14:14

Hold fast, sister. The Lord is faithful.
